Experiencing the Indian Lockdown
Lockdown in India
We arrived in New Delhi around March 17th. Things were starting to slow down more and less people were traveling. The train we arrived on in New Delhi was practically empty. When we arrived we arranged a taxi to get us to our place to stay. On our travels to New Delhi we took a couple of weeks to see some sites along the way. We were starting to get the picture of how bad things were slowing down. At one tourist destination our taxi driver was going to wait for 2 hours as we toured just so he would be guaranteed the 600 rupee fair back to our place. 600 rupees is about $8. When we got to our place in New Delhi I ran out to get some immediate supplies; this was Tuesday afternoon. I purchased some more items on Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday the leader of New Delhi announced that they were going to try to have everyone stay home that weekend, only going out for essentials. Prime Minister Modi announced that everyone was to stay home on Sunday the 22nd as a national experiment to slow the spread of COVID.
On March 24th Modi announced a nationwide lockdown. The change was quick (he only gave notice 4 hours before it was to begin) and it was drastic. See the video below for the before and after.
